About Colombia

Colombia, officially the Republic of Colombia (Spanish: República de Colombia), is located in the northwestern region of South America. Colombia is bordered by Venezuela and Brazil to the east; Ecuador and Peru to the south; the Caribbean Sea to the north; Panama to the northwest and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The Republic of Colombia shares maritime borders with the Caribbean countries of Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Central American countries of Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

While Colombia has experienced armed conflicts in the past, the social climate has improved greatly since 2000, with the their counterinsurgency program, Plan Colombia. Since that time, the country has enjoyed a tremendous reduction in rebel guerrilla groups, paramilitary militias, drug trafficking and corruption. With this plan in place, travel and tourism in Colombia has improved greatly, allowing travel within the country to run smoothly.
